The Underhollow will likely be a Battle Royale game mode

The TI8 Battle Pass description makes it sound like it... Right?

Dota 2 | Valve

With the success of last year’s Battle Pass game mode Siltbreaker, it sounds like another big, crazy custom game mode was in order. Except unlike Siltbreaker, this seems a little more like a frenzy. And by a frenzy we mean a battle. And by a battle, we absolutely mean a Battle Royale.

Yes, reading that description a few more times, it sounds like we’re getting a Battle Royale game mode within one of the most infamous action real-time strategy games of all time. And it does sound like the Dota 2 of Battle Royales, given the implications of an RPG Battle Royale game mode. Let’s break it down.

Battle through a labyrinth filled with monsters, marvels, and many other three-player enemy squads as you search for Roshan’s rarest cheese and work to be the last team standing. You’ll need to navigate carefully to earn the XP and Gold needed to destroy your opponents.

The main components here are that you need to search for the means to destroy other squads you’ll be encountering. Except here, instead of items, you just need to grind extremely quickly to make sure you won’t get squashed by foes.

But don’t take too long—Roshan’s cheese frenzy is causing cave-ins as he moves towards the center of the Underhollow. Soon enough there will be nowhere left to run.

“Cave-ins” just sounds like a really fancy way of saying “we’re cutting off areas in which you can fight” — the restricted-movement catch that’s made Battle Royale games so exciting and fast-paced.

There are a few things we aren’t quite sure of yet. Is the final location consistent? If so, are there blowbacks to moving there? How does staying outside the designated area count against you? And, more importantly, can you pick your own Heroes?

We’ll definitely get answers when The Underhollow gets released by Valve at some point — hopefully before The International this time.
